The following article is based upon Pastor Tony's message "Distractions" preached on July 19th, 2020
Distractions are not new. Our's may look different than Bible times. Nonetheless, there are a plethora of things that would move our focus off of God's plan.
Philippians 1:12–18
12 But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; 13 So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; 14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. 15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: 16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: 17 But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. 18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.
On top of imprisonment, Paul, the preacher, faced opposition from those who were also Christians! He could have quickly become filled with anger and frustration. Some preached Jesus in a way to show off their freedom in comparison to Paul's bonds.
Despite these distractions, Paul followed the plan God had set out for his life. We have much to learn!
12 But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;
We must become clear on God's purpose for our lives. Paul recognized that his life was meant to further the Gospel! Every season of life encouraged believers and shared Jesus with the world. Because of this understanding, Paul understood the purpose amid difficulties and distractions.
Paul's purpose created a perspective on suffering that flipped the script on imprisonment! No longer was prison a distraction, but a fulfillment of God's purpose for Paul's life.
18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.
God completed an amazing plan in Paul's life. The road was filled with distractions, but purpose and perspective led to praise. "Christ is preached" was the cause of rejoicing. It did not matter that some flaunted their liberty to preach! That was a distraction from the fact that Jesus was lifted up.
Instead of becoming distracted, Paul had a plan. He would use every day to lift up the name of Jesus. Consider how he responded:
It's time for us to ignore distractions and live out God's plan for our lives!
